For three days (18/09-20/09/2023) we had the opportunity to examine manuscripts from the St. Gall library on site. We focused on non-digitised manuscripts in order to gain an overview of other possible relevant sources that we might have missed. In doing so, we discovered some gems and were able to better define and outline our corpus of sources. Manuscripts in all possible formats, with different designs, diverse content and thematic orientations from several centuries brought new insights and important texts to light. One major find consisted of entire sermon cycles on the Lord’s Prayer, which had not previously been recognised as such by scholarship, as well as a diagram that used the Latin Lord’s Prayer as a basis for translation in order to translate the words interlinearly into various Germanic languages (below).
In addition to our research activities, we also took the opportunity to visit the monastery itself, the library and the amazing museum. Abbey librarian Dr. Cornel Dora also invited us to a pleasant lunch, for which we would like to take this opportunity to thank him once again.
